Medication for Abortion

Medical abortion is one that is carried out with the use of a combination of drugs administered orally or through the vaginal canal. It works by preventing pregnancy growth and causes the uterine lining to shed. This sort of abortion is legal from the beginning of pregnancy until roughly nine weeks.

You can have an abortion as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. Your doctor will use an ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy and to assess the length of the pregnancy. If you are more than nine weeks pregnant, there are other options for aborting the pregnancy.

The process and number of sessions required for a medication abortion vary based on the sort of clinic you visit and whether or not some tests are offered on-site or require separate consultations.

Side effects of getting a medical abortion

Shortly after taking the second tablet, the most severe side effects of a medical abortion begin. The following side effects can be expected:

  • After taking the second pill, you may experience a mild fever or chills that continue for about a day. Others claim to be exhausted, nauseated, disoriented, and have diarrhoea.
  • For the next three to seven days, the bleeding is similar compared to that of regular menstruation.
  • For the next several hours, there would be a lot of bleeding with blood clots.
  • Pain that lasts around half an hour and is significantly more intense than period pain
  • After a medication abortion, bleeding can be unpredictable, irregular, or extended for up to four weeks.

Risks

Most medical abortion is successful, but a few of the risks that have been noticed in some women are:

  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • An abortion that isn’t complete and may need to be followed up with a surgical abortion
  • Infection
  • Blood clots in the uterus
  • Fever

Oral mifepristone and oral misoprostol:

Oral mifepristone and oral misoprostol are the most prevalent types of medical abortion. Within seven weeks of the starting day of your last period, you should take these drugs.

Vaginal misoprostol

When taken before the embryo reaches nine weeks of gestation, vaginal misoprostol alone would be effective. However, vaginal misoprostol is less effective than other medical abortion methods.

Oral mifepristone with vaginal, buccal, or sublingual misoprostol:

This technique of medical abortion employs the same drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, but this time a slowly dissolving misoprostol tablet is inserted in your vagina, between your teeth and cheek, or under your tongue.

Vaginal misoprostol with methotrexate.

Methotrexate is rarely used for unintended pregnancies, while it is still used for pregnancies outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancies). This form of medical abortion must be completed within seven weeks of your last period’s first day.

A few of the names of the medication are:

  • Cytotec
  • Misoprostol
  • Mifeprex
  • Pitocin
  • Prostin E2
  • Oxytocin
  • Cervidil
  • Carboprost

These are some of the names that abortion pills go by.

Preparing for a Medical Abortion

The healthcare professional will do the following:

  • Perform a physical examination.
  • Perform an ultrasound exam to confirm the fetus isn’t outside the uterus and isn’t a tumour that has grown inside the uterus.
  • Examine your medical background.
  • Test your blood and urine.
  • Describe how abortion drugs work, the side effects, and possible risks and complications

Is it necessary to schedule a follow-up appointment after an abortion?

Within two or three weeks, your healthcare professional will want to see you for a follow-up appointment. They are expected to do the following during this meeting:

  • Keep an eye out for signs of infection
  • Examine your pelvis.
  • An ultrasound can be used to examine your uterus.
  • Discuss the amount of bleeding, when it ended, the colour, and whether or not there were any clots.
  • If you want to avoid future pregnancies, talk to your doctor about contraception.

Self-care after getting an abortion

The doctor will give you instructions on how to care for yourself in the days after the abortion. To help manage the cramps, you can use over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. The use of hot packs and rubbing the sore area can be beneficial.

It is recommended that you avoid the following activities during the week following the surgery to limit the risk of infection:

  • Anything, even tampons, should not be inserted into your vagina
  • Have intercourse in the vagina
  • Until the bleeding stops, engage in any strenuous activity, such as sports or severe physical labour
  • Go for a swim or a bath

You’ll probably feel a mix of feelings after a medical abortion, including relief, grief, sadness, and guilt. These emotions are common. It might be beneficial to discuss them with a counsellor.

When not abortion is possible?

You will not be able to get an abortion:

  • if you’ve gone too far into your pregnancy
  • Call your doctor right away if you think you’re pregnant outside of your uterus.
  • if you are allergic to any of the medications that are being utilized.
  • if you’re taking an aspirin
